Dragon Age 4 QA workers demand to form a union
A group of QA testers working on Dragon Age 4 have filed for unionization.
The employees, who work directly with developer BioWare but as contractors to support company Keywords Studios, are trying to unionize over issues of low wages, a back-to-work mandate, and more.
An anonymous source told Kotaku that Keyword employees are expected to return to their Alberta-based office on May 9 despite the slow increase in COVID-19 cases since the beginning of April.
Keyword employees would not be eligible for sick pay if they had to quarantine due to COVID-19, the source said, while BioWare employees are allowed to work from home completely.
The return-to-work decision was apparently the last straw for the 15-20 quality assurance testers who are already said to be badly compensated. The source said some employees are paid 16.50 Canadian dollars an hour – 12.82 US dollars – which is considerably less than identical roles performed by full BioWare employees.
Other issues were raised including gender-based wage discrimination, a lack of meaningful performance reviews, and a hostile response to unionization efforts.
