DVIDS – News – Semicolon Symbolism: How a Small Mark Represents an Abundance of Courage

During Suicide Prevention Month, the semicolon is a common feature at events and in products related to suicide prevention and awareness. This little punctuation mark – in grammatical terms – represents a place where a sentence could end, but continues.
This meaning has been transferred to suicide awareness and prevention as a symbol to combat suicidal thoughts or behaviors. In the realm of this movement, a semicolon represents a time when a life could have ended, but the choice was made to continue.
In fact, many people in recent years have chosen to get semicolon tattoos as a visual representation of their own personal struggles or support for suicide prevention and awareness. Tattoos are often used to bring up a topic that has never been openly discussed.
Today, a number of organizations use semicolon symbolism in their advocacy work. Most notably, Project Semicolon, which was founded in 2013; and the AGI6; Foundation, a veterans organization that takes its name from a military term meaning “I have your 6” or “I support you”, used the semicolon to open discussions about suicide prevention and awareness .
The semicolon represents hope for those struggling with suicidal thoughts as a way to encourage them to keep going. It’s a simple visual reminder that we are the authors of our lives and have the ability to continue our stories, even in our darkest moments.
