Introducing the New American Literature Series

October 13, 2021 – January 19, 2022

The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy Athens and its American Center Athens are proud to announce our upcoming American Literature Series focusing on the highly popular and influential genre of short fiction. The program will run from October 13, 2021 to January 19, 2022 and follows two previous successful seminars and a series of book presentations.

The eighteen American short story writers/writers selected to be presented at the seminars are: O. Henry, Sherwood Anderson, Dorothy Parker, Ernest Hemingway, Bernard Malamud, Patricia Highsmith, Grace Paley, James Baldwin, Alice Walker, Lucia Berlin, Ann Beattie, Tobias Wolff, Amy Hempel, Lydia Davis, George Saunders, Jhumpa Lahiri, Denis Johnson and Anthony Marra.

The next series of ten seminars will be led by eminent Greek writers Theodoros Grigoriadis (2016 State Literature Prize) and Vangelis Provias and will be held online via the Zoom platform.

It is a professional development program designed to:

  1. Secondary school teachers of literature and/or English language
  2. Graduate and Postgraduate Students of American Literature
  3. Creative Writing Instructors
  4. Book Club Coordinators
  5. Editors and translators
  6. book reviews

The program aims to familiarize participants with the work of great American writers as well as the history, evolution, and importance of this distinct literary form that has contributed to American literature with its content and aesthetic value.

Participants will be encouraged to use these texts in relevant courses, as well as in creative writing exercises and book club activities.

The first meeting will take place on October 13, 2021.

This program will be in Greek, free and with limited availability, so participants must register in advance. The deadline for registration is September 27, 2021.

Certificates of participation will be given to participants upon successful completion of the program.
